To Shop or Not to Shop...Thrift Stores???

Yes, thrift stores are a must…well, sometimes that is.
Thrift store finds can be an excellent way to score name brand clothing and other items; however, not all thrift store finds are are created equal.
While thrift stores can save you a ton of money on some items, other items may be cheaper and worth more by buying brand new in store, especially on sale items.
Tips for thrifty shopping:
1) Know the value - when out in retail stores, pay attention to brand names and the cost of items…it will help you down the road! Trust me.
2) When thrift store shopping, check the brand before buying that cute sweater, it may be cheaper to buy brand new in store! Always, always check the price and brand, just because it’s in a thrift store doesn’t always make it cheaper - seriously, the same sweater could be a Walmart brand which could be purchased brand new for the same price.
3) Try to shop new. By new I mean, before hitting up the thrift store for clothing bargains, check your local retailers for great finds and bargains. If you’re on a tight budget, don’t just assume you can’t afford to buy brand new… AND just because it comes from a thrift store does NOT mean it’s cheaper. Clothing is more valuable to you and worthwhile brand new, it will look prettier and last you longer…so always hit the clearance and sales racks at your retailers first!
4) Try it on! Before assuming that cute bargain sweater will fit, try it on first…there may be a reason it was donated. Most thrift stores have dressing rooms, especially where clothing is sold. The sweater may look cute on the rack but may disappoint you later when you find out it has a funky fit or isn’t exactly true to size.
5) Don’t get in a hurry when thrift shopping. Take your time if possible, go through the racks slowly, take time to inspect those items in your cart before purchasing.
6) Ask to test electronics and appliances before purchasing. Many times items are sold “as is” and are non-refundable. Money spent on junk is money wasted…defeating your cause to save money.
7) Know the return policy! If something breaks or doesn’t fit, know the return policy up front before purchasing…it will save you headaches later and possibly prevent you from buying that cute vase that doesn’t match your decor at all…uh hum.
8) Shop for picture frames! Yes, those gold frames at Hobby Lobby can be found for a fraction of the price at thrift stores. When you need a picture frame, always hit up your local thrift store first, it will save you an average of $10-20 per frame…if it’s the wrong color, spray paint is always a cheap fix.
9) Hardwood furniture and mirrors are other great items to browse thrift shops for…refinishing hardwood is not as difficult as it used to be thanks to chemists and the invention of chalk paint! Mirrors are almost always cheaper in thrift stores and can always be restored with a fresh coat of spray paint.
10) Last but most importantly, Have fun! Take a friend, make it day…and enjoy those bargain finds!
